Puntius madhusoodani
Puntius madhusoodani is a species of fish in the family Cyprinidae in Puntius genus. The species has been discovered in 2010, named and described jointly by Krishnakumar, Benno Pereira & Radhakrishnan and study first published in Biosystematica in 2012 .〔Krishnakumar, K., F.G. Benno Pereira and K.V. Radhakrishnan, 2012. Puntius madhusoodani (Teleostei: Cyprinidae), a new species of barb from Manimala River, Kerala, South India. Biosystematica 5(2):31-37 (Ref. 89446)〕 It was collected from Manimala River in Kerala, India (Western Ghats region), with a running length of 92 km only and it empties into the Vembanad Lake. Puntius madhusoodani is Named after Prof. Dr. B. ==Distribution==
Puntius madhusoodani is so for known only from Manimala River which has its origin in Western Ghats Muthavara Hills (2500 feet above main sea level). There is a good chance of finding them in Pamba River as Manimala river is a tributary of Pamba River.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=About the Rivers of Kerala )〕
==Description==
The holotype CRG-SAC 456 with 91.43mm length was found on the thirumoolapuram region of manimala river near thiruvalla in pattanamthitta district on 17th november 2010. This Puntius fish can be distinguished from the rest of the species by its unique characteristics such as a smaller snout, 2 branched rays and 6 unbranched rays in the anal fin, paired fins hyaline, 9 predorsal scales , 25-26 lateral line scales, dorsal fin inserted nearer to tip of snout rather than to the caudal fin base , branched rays of the dorsal and anal fin is tinted with black color and there are no spots in the dorsal fin base.〔http://www.tcntrust.org/journal.php?month=12&year=2011〕〔http://indiabiodiversity.org/species/show/266931/?max=8&offset=0&classification=265799&taxon=267673&view=grid〕
